"BEFORE I WAS YOUR MOM"
The Inspiration
Walking downtown on a sunny autumn day, having dropped off my youngest at his preschool program, I felt more myself than I had in seven years (since first becoming pregnant with my oldest). Unencumbered by a diaper bag, a stroller, or stooping to hold a small hand, I walked upright and looked ahead at the horizon.
When we become mothers, and especially mothers who stay home with our children, we become creatures of necessity in place of creatures of pleasure. Our beautiful clothing is tucked in the back of the closet, replaced by sweatshirts and leggings that we know will be stained with avocado and breast milk, our unwashed hair scraped into messy buns, and contact lenses drying out in the medicine cabinet, in favor of outdated glasses that used to be reserved for Saturday mornings after a night out.
The Vision
This exhibit is a celebration of our past selves, and seeks to portray who we were before we became mothers. Dressed as our past selves, the ones we put on the back burner while caring for the ones we love, these dramatic portraits will be juxtaposed with the realities of motherhood.
I am seeking 10-20 mothers from a wide range of backgrounds, diversities, and personalities, to have their portrait taken and included as part of a larger public exhibit. Children will not be featured in these photos (unless you want them to be and you give your consent for their likeness to be in the exhibit).
